Stephen Downs (Harrogate) read from Luke Chapter 24 and 1 Corinthians Chapter 15 concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He spoke on the resurrection, "the resurrection is the greatest truth in all of scripture." The one who was resurrected was the sinless one who was made sin for us. He was resurrected by the glory of God the Father who accepted the sacrifice of His Son. He was seen by over 500 people at one time as well as all of his disciples as proof he rose from the dead. The purpose of his death and resurrection is to make many people righteous.

John Richardson (Harrogate) read from Acts Chapter 17 about Paul's witness concerning Christ to the Athenians at the Areopagus. The Athenians in Paul's day, shortly after Jesus' death were religious people, but they worshipped a God they did not know. Paul declared to them who God is. Hi is the Creator of the world, he gives life to us and determines our time on earth. Paul revealed that God now commands all me everywhere to repent because God has set a day when He will judge the world by Jesus Christ whom He raised from the dead. It is through believing in Jesus that we have forgiveness and are able to come before God with our sins cleansed because Jesus died for us.

Mr. John Clegg from Skelmanthorpe read part of Luke 23. He spoke from vs. 33 "And when they were come tothe place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified Him."
He mentioned His love that took Him to that awful place, and what was achieved there.
The central point of time.
The starting point of salvation.
The highest point of love

Philip Martin (Leeds), formally a member of the fellowship spoke on Psalm 23. David, the writer of the Psalm, testified to the Lord as his shepherd. David knew all about shepherding as he was a shepherd himself. The Lord as our shepherd provides for us, leads us and restores us. He gives us the power to do what is right, and his presence dispels fear in the day of trouble. Those of us who are His sheep will live with Him forever.

Stuart Gordon from Harrogate read from Luke Chapter 19 verses 1-10 about Zacchaeus, a tax collector in the time of Jesus. Zac wanted to see Jesus and had to climb a tree to be able to do so because he was a small man and there were a lot of people in the crowd. Are people stopping you from seeing Jesus? He was also a rich man through dishonest gain, taking more taxes from people than he should. Jesus was interested in him. Jesus deals with people personally, and asked Zac could he come to his house to meet him. Zac received him willingly and his life was transformed. He gave half his wealth to the poor and restored four times the people he had cheated.

John Walls from the fellowship read from John's Gospel Chapter 3 and spoke about the need to be born again. Without the new birth, which is a Spiritual birth through faith in Jesus, we cannot see and we cannot enter the kingdom of God. Jesus Christ was crucified upon a cross the we might live forever with Him. He died for our sin that we might not perish.

Peter Jones from the fellowship read from Genesis chapter 22 and Colossians Ch 1 verses 15-20. He spoke on the similarities between Abraham and Isaac and God the Father and God the Son. Abraham was asked to sacrifice Isaac on the alter but in the end God spared him from taking his son's life. When Jesus dies God did not spare His Son but punished Him for our sins.

Gordon Robshaw from the fellowship read from Exodus 17 and John 4 and spoke about water, the living water that Jesus gives us. Living water symbolises God's living word through which we are saved. If we receive the water of the word it will be like a fountain springing up into eternal life.

Laurence Jones read Galatians 1 vs.1-10
He spoke about "The True Gospel"
If we know what the true gospel is then we will reconise a false gospel.
The true gospel is based solely on the Word of God, not by works but by grace.
Christ gave Himself so that we could be declared righteous (justification by faith). We have deliverance, freedom, peace and assurance through His finished work.
Any false gospel requires us to earn salvation which leads to bondage and failure because it can never be achieved.

Jonathan Gibson from Harrogate read Leviticus 16 and spoke about The Day of Atonement.

He began by pointing out various important events in history and emphasised the importance and significance of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The High Priest could only enter the Most Holy Place once a year with shedding of blood but that could never take away sin but through Christ's death we have access to God at any time and our sins are removed as far as the east is from the west not just covered as with atonement.

William Horsborough opened by reading Psalm 136, "O give thanks to the Lord..." He read from I Timothy Chapter 1 on the mercy and grace of God and the praise we owe him. Paul, the author of the letter of Timothy describes himself before he met Jesus as a blasphemer, a persecutor and an insolent man, "but I obtained mercy." Paul experienced the marvellous mercy of God. Paul writes about the grace of God as being "exceedingly abundant". This generous grace should result in prolific praise from those who know God's forgiveness. For those people the joy of the Lord is their strength.

Graham Elliot from the fellowship spoke on 4 precious promises from the Bible. The reading was in 1 Peter Ch. 1 v. 13 - Ch. 2 v.12 and in 2 Peter ch. 2 vs. 1-4. He talked about how precious it is to be a Christian. There is a great cost to our salvation, God paid the price of our sin through sending His Son to be our sacrifice. The four promises Graham spoke on were: 1) "Come unto me all you who labour and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest." 2) "I am with you always." 3) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. 4) "If I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also."

Bruce Clark spoke on 'Love'. He read in Matthew Chapter 22 verses 37-40 and 1 John Chapter 4 vs. 17-21. He spoke about four Greek words for love; the love between a mother and child, friendship love, love between a man and women, and most importantly God's love. God gives His love freely to us, He gave us His Son Jesus Christ. When we receive Jesus as our Lord God calls us to love Him and our neighbours. as ourselves. Without love we are nothing.

John Green talked briefly about his work with Young Life and what prayer can achieve among young people when they pray. He read in Mark Chapter 8 verses 22-38. In the chapter Jesus asks his followers two questions, the first being, "Who do men say that I am?" The second is more personal, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter, one of his followers answers, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus Christ asks us to follow Him. Through His death he offers us forgiveness in our sins that are past, power for the present and hope for the future. Being a follower of Jesus means no longer living for self but for Jesus, its about saving your soul and being ready to meet God. "Its not easy but its worth it."

Jonathan Scarsbrook from Killamarsh, Sheffield gave the gospel message. He spoke on plans and gave two examples of people in the Bible who made plans. One was a rich farmer who one year had a successful crop and decided to take it easy. He told himself to eat, drink and be merry. The Lord called him "a fool", and took away his life from him that very night. The second man was a criminal on the cross beside Jesus. He recognised that he was being put to death for his crimes but that Jesus had done nothing wrong. Jesus promised him eternal life because of his belief. The Bible warns us not to boast of tomorrow, for we do not know what another day will bring. Repent of your sin and trust in Jesus.

Keith Clayton, Castleford, preached the gospel. He read from Isaiah chapter 1 vs. 10-20. These people came before God in empty ritual and with hypocrisy in their hearts. They had unclean hands and offered meaningless prayer. Much like people today who have an outward form of religion but do not truly know God. The Bible tells us 'all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.' It also tells us ' all our righteousness is like filthy rags.' How then can we be made righteous? Not by works, but by faith alone the Bible tells us. 'Being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.'

Stuart Gordon, Harrogate, read about four days from Luke Ch. 2 vs. 1-14, Mark Ch. 15 vs. 25-39, John Ch. 20 vs. 1-18, and 1 Thessalonians Ch. 4 vs. 13-18. These four days changed the world like no other day. These are unique and special days in history. The angels declared the birth of Jesus to a few shepherds, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men." A Roman centurion at the death of Jesus announced that "this is the Son of God". Many seen him after His resurrection from the dead. When Jesus comes again 'every eye shall see Him." Are you ready?

Geoff Carter from Wakefield testified to the goodness of God at the Yorkshire camp, which he is involved in. On two occasions he told how a water supply was provided to the camp when in need of water. Geoff read the words of Jesus from John 7 v. 47: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. ³⁸ He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” God's water is free, anyone can come and drink. That water is an illustration of what God gives us when we believe in Him.

George Clamp from Pontefract preached the gospel. He read from Luke Chapter 4 verses 16-22, focusing his message on verse 20 'the eyes of all...were fixed on Him.' The people were transfixed with Jesus, He spoke like one who had authority. The speaker told us that Jesus has the answers to the world's problems. He has died for sin, rose from the dead and is alive forevermore. He is ready to save you if you come to Him. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

Philip Kaye from Skelmanthorpe preached the gospel. He read three questions from Luke Ch. 13, Matthew Ch.19 and Acts Ch.16. "Lord, are there few that be saved?" Few are saved because they do not feel their need of salvation, nor are willing to seek God's help. "Who then can be saved?" Romans Ch. 10 v.13 reads that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. "What must I do to be saved?" Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. It's all a matter of faith.

Paul Jackson from Harrogate preached from Psalm 10 vs.1 "Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?"

1/ We can't blame God for our problems and the worlds problems. Sin is the root problem and sin came by man.

2/ God has done something - He sent his Son to die in our place. If God intervened to remove all the wrong caused by sin that would include us so He acts in grace.

3/ God will do something in a future day He will judge in righteousness and all will be put right

Jack Douglas, a missionary to Papua New Guinea, gave a report of his recent trip between April - June 2011. He spoke in the gospel from 1 Peter 1 v. 10-25 on the meaning of redemption and read from Romans 6 v. 15-23 concerning how we were slaves but have now been set free. People whom we live amongst do not believe that they need redemption. The price of redemption is death, Christ died in our place to accomplish eternal redemption. We are redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus.

Phillip read Psalm 86 and Acts 22 verses 22-31. He developed the theme of the scriptures from Genisis to Revelation concerning Gods love and the plan of salvation. He also emphasised the need to deal with sin through our repentance, and the fact that Christ died to bear the judgement of God for sin. The message was very challenging for the unsaved and very thought provoking for the believers. It was good to renew fellowship with Phillip who recently moved to Leeds from Scarborough.

Philip read from 1Peter Ch 1. He spoke about believers going through suffering and persecution and how our hope is in God. Throughout the chapter there is the recurring theme of the resurrection, if Christ died and rose again we can be sure that we too will rise. Like the believers then we too are exiles in this world, strangers and foreigners. They suffered, Christ also suffered. There is the reminder in the passage of the ransom paid for us through the blood of Jesus, which is incorruptible.

John Walls from the fellowship gave is testimony and preached the gospel. He read from Psalm 139, a testimony of God's protection, presence, power, and pathway in the life of David. He also read from John 19 v. 30 concerning the last words Jesus spoke before he died "It is finished". These are the words through which John got saved when he realised as a boy of 11 that Jesus had done the work of salvation at the cross. He closed with some comparisons in his life with those of the disciples in Mark's gospel and how we do not need to fear in the Christian life. Jesus is with us and will calm the storm. We should be obedient to God's will and commandments as this brings blessing from God.

The speaker read from Luke 23 vs. 33-43 concerning 'the Dying Thief' who was crucified alongside Jesus. A lot of people resist the conviction of sin, not so with the thief. He was convinced of the righteousness of Jesus Christ and also the certainty of judgement. We can confidently know that the thief was saved, Jesus said "Today you will be with me in Paradise".

God speaks in the world today through creation and through His Word in the Bible. The world is looking for answers (mostly in the wrong places), these answers can be found in the Bible. God also provided salvation to mankind through His Son Jesus Christ who died on a cross for us. You ask, how can I be saved? The answer is in Acts 4 v. 12 "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved."

Mr Heyhoe from Hull opened his remarks by saying that many who bear the name 'Christian' are not necessarily Christian as defined in the Bible, they are far removed from biblical Christianity.
He spoke from Numbers Ch. 23 vs. 19-20 concerning a God who cannot lie. God sent His Son, Jesus, to deliver us from our sins. His blessing is forever and he delivers on His promises of eternal life to those who believe in Jesus. We need to believe in the person of Jesus to enter into God's blessings, John Ch 3 v.36 says that "He who believes on the Son is not condemned but He who does not believe is condemned already."

On Sunday 17th Neil Bedford from Leeds read from John 18 vs.28-40. He challenged us about truth "what is truth" is your truth the same as mine? There is only one truth and only one way to Heaven Jesus said "I am the way".

On Sunday Ewing Cross from Huddersfield spoke on the rapture he read from John 14 vs.1-3, Acts 1 vs.6-12, and 1Thess. 4 vs.13-18. We could go without dying.

The one who is coming is the same one who died on the cross. He had nowhere to lay His head, He was crowned with thorns but His Church will be complete. His substitutional death made it all possible. You need to be saved before you are left behind.

Pharaoh's dream has too often been my waking experience. My days of sloth have ruinously destroyed all that I had achieved in times of zealous industry; my seasons of coldness have frozen all the genial glow of my periods of fervency and enthusiasm; and my fits of worldliness have thrown me back from my advances in the divine life. I had need to beware of lean prayers, lean praises, lean duties, and lean experiences, for these will eat up the fat of my comfort and peace.

If I neglect prayer for never so short a time, I lose all the spirituality to which I had attained; if I draw no fresh supplies from heaven, the old corn in my granary is soon consumed by the famine which rages in my soul. When the caterpillars of indifference, the cankerworms of worldliness, and the palmerworms of self-indulgence, lay my heart completely desolate, and make my soul to languish, all my former fruitfulness and growth in grace avails me nothing whatever. How anxious should I be to have no lean-fleshed days, no ill-favoured hours!

If every day I journeyed towards the goal of my desires I should soon reach it, but backsliding leaves me still far off from the prize of my high calling, and robs me of the advances which I had so laboriously made. The only way in which all my days can be as the "fat kine," is to feed them in the right meadow, to spend them with the Lord, in His service, in His company, in His fear, and in His way. Why should not every year be richer than the past, in love, and usefulness, and joy?—I am nearer the celestial hills, I have had more experience of my Lord, and should be more like Him.

O Lord, keep far from me the curse of leanness of soul; let me not have to cry, "My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me!" [Isaiah 24] but may I be well-fed and nourished in Thy house, that I may praise Thy name.

Lenzie from Leeds opened by telling us how he became a Christian. He was invited to a gospel meeting and felt his burden of sin before God after hearing a message preached from the Bible . When he went home that night he prayed asking God for forgiveness, and through belief in Jesus Christ was saved.
Philip Martin (Leeds), until recently a member of the fellowship in Scarborough, preached from 2 Corinthians Chapter 5. His message reminded the Christian that our home is not here on earth, its in heaven. He touched on matters of faith and how we should live to please God and not ourselves. Finally he closed with a call to confess our sins, if we have not already, and be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ who died for us.

On Sunday 19th June Mr. Mark Reynolds of SASRA from Catterick gave a short report of his work at the garrison and told us that there were 3,500 soldiers there at the moment and an intake of 250 per fortnight to which he preaches the gospel and gives New Testements to. He asked prayer for the future that the opportunities might continue to be available to him. There have been significant numbers of souls that have trusted the Saviour.

He also preached from John 10 vs.9-30. God allows things in our lives that purhaps we don't understand but He is working His purpose out in our lives and in the World. He also told us that time was precious and we should make the most of it, he spoke of assurance that we are held by two hands Christ's and the Father's. He is able to save He is able to keep now and Eternity.

Jim Locke from Leeds took the gospel service. He asked a question from the Bible, how can someone become righteous, that is right with God? The Bible tells us all have sinned and come short of God's standard. Yet we can be justified, that is made right, through Jesus Christ's blood. Jesus died that we might be forgiven. By being justified we have Peace with God, through Jesus Christ.

At our Sunday service Graeme Elliott spoke on Peace. Key verse: Isaiah Ch. 26 v.3, other readings from Mark Ch. 4 and Colossians Ch. 1.
In a world where there is no peace God promises peace to those who trust in Him and believe in His Son Jesus Christ; Jesus represents God to us in human form. We read in Mark Ch. 4 of Jesus with his followers in a storm. They are very afraid and look to Jesus for help, Jesus commands the wind to stop and calms the waves, and asks a searching question "Why are you so fearful. Why is it that you no faith?" Without faith the Bible tells us it is impossible to please God.
Jesus provides peace for us through the blood of His cross (Colossains Ch. 1). He died that we might know peace, everlasting peace with Him.

Last Sunday we were pleased to have two visitors, Mr and Mrs G. Clarke from Rugby.

Richard Gibson from Leeds spoke at the Sunday gospel service. He works with Christian Witness to Israel. He spoke from Mark chapter 14 verses 12-51 concerning the last supper Jesus had with his disciples before His crucifixion. Richard gave a practical application about our attitude towards Jesus and the rewards and difficulties of living for Him. A challenge was given to the congregation about the particular need to reach Jewish people with the gospel since the gospel is to the Jew first and then to the Gentile.

Malcolm Neate of Leeds proclaimed the Gospel on Sunday 8th May using verses from the Epistle to the Hebrews 9 24 -28 and ch. 10 11-14. He spoke of the self-sacrifice of the Lord at Calvary as a sacrifice available, uniquely suitable, and acceptable. He described the Saviour as great in creatorial Power, eternally with God and great in saving commitment. Those attending were urged to flee from the wrath to come.

On Sunday 15th May John Farnsworth of South Elmsall led our meeting and focused on the question"...what is your life.." that is contained in a short passage from the Epistle of James, ch. 4 13-17. He also read out to us an account of the background to the writing and popularisation of the hymn "Great is thy faithfulness...".

We thank these Brethren for their effort in sharing the Gospel here in Scarborough.

On Good Friday Graham Elliot of our own assembly led our meeting, speaking from
John 19 1-42. He spoke of the Person, the Purpose and the Power of the Cross and also referenced Hebrews 10 12, 2 Corinthians 5 17,19, 1 Peter 1 18, Isaiah 53 4 and Romans 10 9.

On Easter Sunday Malcolm Blanche of Wetherby conducted our Gospel Meeting. The reading was from Acts 17 1-9. He spoke of our Lord Jesus: the forgotten King, the foretold King, the future/forever King, the rejected King but, praise the Lord, the Risen King and yet more, the Returning King!

Last Lord's Day in the evening David Harris of Castleford ministered to us from James 4 7-10 reminding us of the cure for "wordliness".

We were once again blessed at the Lord's Table by visiting Saints, three generations in fact from Blackburn Gospel Hall in West Lothian. Our friends Philip and Elizabeth Clough also joined us.

In the evening Douglas Rae of Leeds conducted our Gospel Meeting. He drew our attention to the words of our Lord, recorded in John 14 1-14, words of reassurance, comfort and of a certain hope. Hallelujah, what a Saviour!

We were pleased to welcome visitors from Ely, West Mersea and Leeds at the Breaking of Bread meeting. We were blessed to have as our speaker David Cartwright from the assembly at Redcar, Cleveland. He spoke from the story of Zaccheus as recorded in Luke 19 1-10 using it to stress how serious and how urgent is the matter of Salvation. The selection of hymns from Mission Praise I found particularly affecting: "One day when heaven was filled with His Praises", " I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene", "In loving kindness Jesus came, my soul in mercy to reclaim" and "Jesus my Lord will love me forever." My only caveat is that the Bible never describes sin as "black" but [in Isaiah 1 18] as "red" in the sense of a dye that is almost impossible to remove.

Sunday evening at the Gospel Hall

On Sunday 3rd April our meeting was ably led by our Brother Frank Jackson of Hull. His choice of texts was Genesis 11 26-12 3 and ch. 25 1-11. He made an interesting point about the structure of the book of Genesis and suggested the promises made to Abram to be the "fulcrum" about which the book turns. Indeed all subsequent promises made by God to his people including the promise of the Saviour are in a sense contained in the promise to Abram. He is as important a figure to Christians as he is to Jews since he is to the former the spiritual progenitor and to the latter the natural forefather. Interesting use was made of the facts of Terah's life - his willingness to follow human tradition rather than to submit to the leading of God - and the tendency among both believers and non- believers to behave in a similar way. Again, a lesson can be drawn from the family move from Ur towards Canaan but stopping in Haran. See Hebrews 10 38/39. The presence of younger brethren in the meeting was a great encouragement.

Scenes from the Parents and Tots Group [Monday a.m.]

On Sunday 7th June our evening meeting was led by our Brother Graham Elliot from our own assembly. The reading was from Exodus chapter 3 1-22. We were reminded of the Mercy of God in making preparation for the liberation of His people. In verse 7 God says "I have seen... I have heard... I know". He sent a Man to lead His people, a man who entered obscurity, took up a position of humility, was prepared during a period of years and was effective in his Divinely appointed work insofar as he trusted in God. So it was in the case of our Lord.

The amplification system that was recently installed incorporates a recording facility so that CDs of the meeting exist and we are hoping to make them available as computer files for the benefit of those unable to attend the meeting.

We continue to have in our prayers Iris and Terry Benstead and also Peter Jones, who will shortly be having a hip replacement operation. We praise God for his miraculous healing of one of our friends, Dianne Brookbank, whose tumour "disappeared "!

Sunday at the Hall

Yesterday was special for us in that we were visited by the Lancelot family from Skelmanthorpe.

Brother Tim posted this comment on the blog but in case you missed it this is what he wrote, "Hi there! My family and I are looking forward to being with the Christians at Durham Road Gospel Hall to remember the Lord Jesus in the Breaking of Bread tomorrow.This will also be the first time I will be with you to share the good news of God's free salvation. I hope you can be there in the evening - I'm hoping to give an audio visual presentation on what the Bible says about God's greatness.This will be at the usual time of 6:30 - great to see you if you can make it.Tim, Rachael, Nathanael (9), Priscilla (7), Samuel (6 today!)" Rachael's mother was with us too.

On Saturday 24th July Stephen and Gill Davis who have been working for the Lord in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam for several years will be visiting us at the Gospel Hall. Stephen will give a report at 4pm and will minister the Word of God after tea (6pm). He will also share the Gospel on the following day. We pray for their safety whilst travelling and for the Lord's help for Stephen during his time of preparation.

On 4th April our evening meeting was conducted by Malcolm Blanche of Weatherby. We read from John 2 13-22, Matt. 1238-41 and Exodus 4 1-9. He commented on the place of signs and miracles in the Ministry of the Lord Jesus. He taught on the Resurrection - that it showed the Power of God, it is the finished Work of Christ, that it serves notice on the world of future judgment and at the time of that judgment there will be a separation of believers to His Glorious Presence in Heaven and non-believers to an eternal hell.

On April 11th Alan Green of Harrogate spoke to us of the new life that is available to the believer. These passages of Scripture were read: Romans 10 8-13 and John 20 19-31.

Yesterday 18th April we were blessed by the ministry of Marcus Reid of Selby who was standing in for his father-in-law, Alan Green. We are praying that Alan will quickly recuperate from his recent operation. Marcus preached very clearly on 1 Corinthians 13 explaining the keywords in verse13: "Faith, Hope and Love"

We continue to pray for the full recovery of Iris Benstead and that the Lord will encourage Terry and the family. We also lift up Dianne to the Lord and ask Him to help Billy to support her.

We continue to be blessed week by week by visiting speakers who lead our Gospel Meeting at 6.30pm, all of whom travel a considerable distance to be with us. Since our last report these include Frank Jackson of Hull, Stephen Downs of Harrogate, David Cartwright of Guisborough and this evening John Farnsworth of South Emsall who led us in a study of Acts 26 where the Apostle Paul gives his testimony.

We have also been blessed in another way by a visit from Brethren and Sisters from an assembly in Leicester who included Clive, Rachel and Naomi Surrell and Richard, Carole, Rosalyn and Joel Pilgrim.

Also [!] our Sister Doreen Snowden [who has been suffering with shingles] was able to be with us this evening.

We continue to pray for Terry and Iris Benstead at this difficult time for them and their family.

Sunday 21st February

A different type of evening meeting was enjoyed by those few saints able to reach the Hall, there having been significant snowfall during the day. This prevented the expected speaker, Mark Reynolds of SASRA from being able to travel and Graham Elliot of our own fellowship stood in at short notice. We were presented with an outline sketch of the Epistle written by The Apostle, James thus:

chapter 1 what the believer has - a confident stand
chapter 2 what the believer does - compassionate service
chapter 3 what the believer says - careful speech
chapter 4 what the believer feels - contrite submission
chapter 5 what the believer gives - concerned sharing

We looked at the following passages chapter 1 1-8, chapter 2 1-23 and chapter 5 7-8, 11 and 17.

We considered the examples of Abraham, Job and Elijah as men of faith and we were exhorted to faith, patience, righteousness and an active prayer life.

Gospel Meetings

Jonathan Slater of the Faith Mission in York came to take our Gospel Meeting on Sunday 31st January. He focused our attention to the only Redeemer, the sinless Lord Jesus.We read from 2 Corinthians 5 vs 1-10 and especially the exhortation in vs 10 to please God. (Compare Enoch). Also in 2 Timothy 2 vs 3-4 we are told to separate ourselves from anything that hinders our progress in the Christian faith. (Also Romans 12 vs1) We are to be witnesses, to be generous and to exercise faith through obedience Hebrews 11 6.

Richard Malcolm of Killamarsh was our guest speaker this evening [February 7th] and told us the "..old, old story of Jesus and His Love." He gave a very clear and complete Gospel message supported at all points by Bible texts. We look forward to his return in the future D.V.

Our annual fellowship meal was held on Saturday 6th February at the Hall. There was a good attendance and we are especially thankful to Ellen and Marion for providing an excellent meal. We also thank all those who provided entertainment after the meal.

We continue to be blessed by the willingness of able brethren to come and present the Gospel message at our Sunday evening meeting. On Sunday 10th January Laurence Jones of Scarborough used a passage from Luke 18 1-17 ( especially vs 11-14) to speak of two quite different prayers given by two men of contrasting attitudes, the pharisee and the publican. They left to two different destinations, the one condemned as trusting in his own self righteousness; the other justified as trusting in God for salvation.

On Sunday 17th January Paul Richardson visited from Harrogate and remarked that since it had been established that the normal attention span was 17 minutes he would confine his address to that time limit. He did! Using the title of a pop song from yesteryear "Three steps to heaven" he advised that we must recognise that we are sinners in the sight of God, experience guilt and repent - turn from our sins and trust in Jesus to be our Saviour and look forward to the Rapture when we will be taken up to dwell in the presence of God forever.

Yesterday evening [ 24th January] John Clegg of Skelmanthorpe based his message upon four passages from John's Gospel: chaps. 14 1-6, 15 13, 10 17-18 and 27-29. There is a two word phrase common to each of those passages "no man". These four things man cannot do: he cannot go to heaven without Christ, he cannot love us the way Christ does, he could not take the life of Christ away from him - the Saviour laid down His life willingly- and man cannot take away the salvation of the believer. All present were exhorted to take hold of the offer of salvation in order that on His Day we may meet the King of Kings as Saviour not as Judge.

First Gospel Meeting of the New Year

We were greatly blessed this evening by a Gospel presentation by Gordon Robshaw of our own assembly. I enjoyed his meditative style - he referred to Christ's use of parables[reading from Psalms 78 1-7 and Matthew 13 10-17 and 34-35] and the reason why: a mixed audience of those who trusted in Him and those who did not. One phrase particularly struck me which Gordon used when describing the Salvation that God offers "...a right relationship, a new relationship and a permanent relationship"!

Last week the meeting was led by Andrew Elliot. A brief report from anyone present would be welcome {Click on "comment"}.

Our meeting on 6th December was ably led by John Richardson of Harrogate who spoke on the inherited disease of sin and its fatal consequence for those who have not put their trust in the Saviour, Jesus Christ. He referred to several texts including Proverbs 14 12, Romans 5, Revelation 20 11-15, 1 Thessalonians 4 13-18 and 2 Corinthians 6 2.

Our meeting this evening [20th December] was led by Bruce Clark of Burniston. We sang several carols and read from Matthew 2 1- 12. Bruce presented a simple Gospel message - the Lord Jesus is knocking on the hearts of men and women, boys and girls. Will you let him in? And if not, why not?

Jason Stewart from Harrogate led our meeting on Sunday 22nd November and spoke from four texts: Matthew 14 22-33, Matthew 8 1-3, John 14 1-6 and Matthew 29-34. We were reminded of our need to be saved from sin and the great Mercy of God when he witholds the punishment we deserve when we trust in the Lord Jesus as Saviour.

Richard Gibson of Christian Witness to Israel, who is based in Leeds led our meeting on Sunday 29th November. He gave a report of the work of CWI, also of the Leeds Messianic Fellowship of which he is a founder member and of "Yachad" a fellowship for young Messianic Jews. He spoke of the difficulties and challenges involved in witnessing to Jews, in breaking down barriers of suspicion and correcting false ideas and about the work of supporting believing (Messianic) Jews. He asked for prayer for the work in which he is involved and in particular for the salvation of Keren, the wife of a young believer(Matthew).

He gave us a word of encouragement using the passage from Hebrews 10 19-39 reminding us to keep close to God, to maintain the Hope that we have in our salvation, to keep encouraging one another and to continue to meet together. (v 22-25). In this way we can maintain the freshness, vitality, boldness and excitement of our early experience of faith in Yeshua (Jesus).

Phillip Hastings of United Beach Missions spoke about the ongoing work and requested prayer for the work at Carbis Bay, St Ives, Falmouth and Llandudno. We read Nehemiah 1 - 28 and were challenged: do we care (about Gospel Outreach), who are we praying to and what are we asking for?

Stuart Gordon of Harrogate brought a Gospel Message using the passage, John's Gospel 10 1-9. A "Door" can be a place of safety Genesis 7 16, a place of escape Exodus 12, or a way of entrance Revelation 3 20.

Hannah Jones is due to give birth to her second child at the weekend. We are praying for a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Praise God!

Sunday at the Hall

Peter Jones remains unwell and we are praying that he is soon better. It was good to see Graham back in action today.

This evening Neil Bedford of Leeds conducted our Gospel meeting and spoke from Matthew 11 1-15. There were many interesting points especially a distinction drawn between doubt, a questioning that may lead to a deeper more thought-through faith and unbelief.
John the Baptist had an inadequate understanding of the Lord's ministry and we were challenged to jettison any false ideas we might have about the Saviour. Again there were a few children in the meeting who listened well.

On Tuesday (D.V.) we will be considering the first three verses of the Letter to the Hebrews.

On the First Day of the Week: At our Gospel Meeting on Sunday 11th October we were much Blessed by a message from our Brother Jonathan Gibson of Harrogate and by the attendance of a number of children who are known to the meeting through the work with local children that goes on during the week.

Jonathan outlined briefly six blessings that come to us when we trust in the Saviour: Peace, Grace, Hope, Love, Deliverance and Joy. He supported what he said from The Scriptures at Romans chapter 5.

Peter Jones was unable to attend meetings on the Lord's day due to feeling unwell; Graham continues to take time out to rest and find some easing of the discomfort he experiences due to a back injury. We pray that these two Brethren will be fully restored according to the Lord's Will.

It is encouraging to know that there are Saints who take time to read these postings - it would be even more encouraging to get online feedback! We were greatly blessed this morning as we met to remember the Lord and especially the depth and breadth of His Love towards us.

This evening our Gospel Meeting was led by Rob Mitchell of Leeds City Mission. He spoke about the importance of prayer in the process of mission and spoke from Matthew 13 1-9, the Parable of the Sower and noted its primary application to believers. There has to be a Sower before there can be fruit! When the Lord selects His disciples He initiates the relationship with a call, "Follow Me".

Rob reminded us of three of the Lord's commands: to pray to the Lord of the harvest (Matt. 9 38), to make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28 19) and to love one another (John 15 12). Thank you to our Brother Rob for an interesting and challenging presentation.

Gospel Meetings

On Sunday 6th September Craig Maffey of Leeds presented a clear message using the theme "past, present and future". He made use of the following texts: Acts 7 28&29a, Hebrews 3 15-19 and 4 4, James 4 13-15 and Hebrews 13 8. We were reminded that sin will be exposed - Romans 2 16 and that the believer in the Lord Jesus is promised Salvation John 5 24.

On Sunday 13th September John Frankish of Normanton led our Gospel Meeting. The theme was the opposed pair of "Wisdom" and "Foolishness". He opened the meeting with a reading of Psalm 127. The main text explored was 1 Corinthians 1 18-25. We were reminded that the Gospel message does not appeal to human reason [see ibid chapter2 6 ff] and that God works out His purposes according to His own design. In conclusion John referred to Psalm 14 1 and Psalm 111 10.

At the Breaking of Bread meeting this morning we were joined by John and Jill Grove of Blackburn , Scotland.

The Blessing of visitors!

We were encouraged on Sunday 9th August by the presence of Fred and Marjorie Beevers, who were on their way to Edinburgh, Tom and Pauline MacAlpine and Mr Donald Stewart and family.

Paul Jackson of Harrogate brought his family with him and led our evening Gospel meeting. The passage of Scripture considered was Romans 10 9-17.

We also welcomed Janet a contact of Doreen Snowden and hope to see her again.

Missionary Friends

On Sunday 2nd August we were blessed by a visit from our missionary friends Jack and Isa Douglas. They gave a full report of their recent time in Papua New Guinea where they had visited the communities in which they had worked during their 37 year service. They were much encouraged to see the work which they had begun continuing to develop and to see the profound changes that the Gospel had made in the lives of the believers there.

Whilst there Jack led a study of the book of Hebrews that was attended by over 200 believers. He was also able to deliver a radio with batteries and a solar panel. They witnessed the baptism of about 40 believers and noted that the Gospel had spread mostly among the more peripheral groups within the society but hoped that in due course the groups of believers would begin to make an impact on Papua New Guinea as a whole.

They hope to return again later this year to lead a study of John’s Gospel. Meanwhile they continue to be involved at the NTM training centre at North Cotes, Lincolnshire. Jack led us in the preaching of the Gospel during the evening meeting.

Our Brother John Green from York led our Gospel meeting on Sunday 5th July. He encouraged us to pray for summer camps happening at Boroughbridge, Thornthwaite, Missterton and in other places.

The readings were from Psalm 32 and Luke 17 1-10. John approached the subject of forgiveness by asking four questions:

Who should we forgive?
What is forgiveness?
Why is it hard to forgive?
How much does God forgive?

We were exhorted to develop our understanding of forgiveness by forgiving each other and developing unity in the assembly.

Gospel Meeting

We were greatly blessed by our visiting speaker, John Clegg on Sunday 28th June. He presented the Gospel message using the text Matthew 10 17-22. He spoke of the choice that each individual has to make whether to accept Christ or to reject Him. He noted that during His earthly ministry the Lord spoke to crowds, to small groups and to individuals. He reminded us of the urgency of the Gospel message in the light of two inescapable facts: our mortality and the Lord's second coming [1 Thess. 4 13-18]. The rich young ruler came at the right pace; he came to the right place!

We who were at the Hall on Sunday were certainly at the right place and we wish every Blessing to John and his family.

Gospel Meeting

John Clegg from Skelmanthorpe led our meeting on 28th June and gave us all such a clear presentation of the Gospel: every individual has the opportunity to be with the Lord or to be without Him. He reminded us thet the Lord spoke to crowds, to groups and to individuals. He spoke about the urgency of the Gospel message in the light of two certainties: the mortality of each individual and the fact of Christ's return in glory. [1 Corinthians 15/John 14].

We praise the Lord for raising up our Brother in the ministry of His Word and pray that You will continue to bless him and his family. Amen

On the Lord's Day

A visiting brother [Graham] broke bread with us. He also gave us a link to the website for his home assembly www.luthermuirgospelhall.org where you can read his testimony.

We were much blessed at the Gospel Meeting by our brother, George Clamp who delivered an uncompromising Gospel message based around four texts: Luke 23 42 (repentance), Acts 9 6 (obedience), Mark 4 38 (desperation) - the Lord Jesus delivers us to safety, certainty and enjoyment - and Revelation 19 1 (The praise of Him). Wonderful!

Recent Meetings

The Lord has favoured us during recent days in sending two able brethren to preach the Gospel. On Sunday 31st May we were addressed by Mr Graham Stanley of Leeds who spoke with both passion and clarity. The reading was from Luke 14 15-24. Rituals/religion were contrasted with the relationship that the believer has with the Lord Jesus Christ. We were reminded of the great gift of Salvation - that we are freed not only from the penalty appropriate to our sin but also from the power of sin over our lives that is a part of our natural condition. Liberation indeed!

In the morning we were joined at the Lord's Table by a number of visitors: Mr and Mrs Flett, Mr and Mrs Holmes, Mr and Mrs Munro and a brother and sister from Surrey. May they each be blessed in the assemblies to which they returned.

Yesterday, 7th June - we were to have been encouraged by Mr Stephen Clegg, who being unable to come deputised Mr Scott Armstrong who was accompanied by a friend. Readings were from Psalm 85 v 10, Luke 18 vs 9-13 and ch. 23 vs 32-3 & vs 39-46. Our brother spoke of our need for a Saviour, a True Sustainer and an Advocate. We need the Mercy of One who stood in our place.

Sunday 24th May

We were delighted to welcome Mr and Mrs Holmes of Killamarsh to the Lord's Table once again and hope that their short stay in Scarborough will be pleasant and restful. We were also greatly encouraged by their report of work being done by Stephen Clegg amongst prisoners and of a couple who have recently come to faith who had previously been enmeshed in drink/drug addiction and attendant criminal activity. Once again the children in the family testified concerning the welcome improvement in the home atmosphere. Praise the Lord!

Our evening Gospel meeting was led by Stan Chapelow who read from Luke Chapter 4 verses 15 - 30 and Psalms 56 verse 9

Brian Nixon was unable to visit us due to illness and we were pleased that Laurence Jones was able to take on the responsibility for the meeting on Sunday 10th May at short notice. We read Psalm 119 32-40, Joshua 71 - 82 & 26-9 and Galations 3 10. Our Brother reminded us of the seriousness of sin in the eyes of God and called us to examine ourselves, repent and seek God's forgiveness.

Allan Green of Harrogate spoke this evening [Sunday 17th May], retelling the story of David and Goliath, reminding us that God has revealed himself in Creation, in His Holy Word and through His Beloved Son and simply describing our need to be saved from eternal punishment and our need to be saved now. The reading was from John chapter 14 verses 1-6.

We were sorry that due to a health difficulty Jack and Isa were not able to visit us on Sunday 26th April and we trust that the Lord will provide His perfect healing to Isa and that we will be able to hear their report on a rearranged date.

Graham Elliot led our gospel meeting in their absence and spoke about the communion between God and man that is now possible on the basis of what the Lord Jesus Christ has done. We read Exodus 29 38-46 and Hebrews 10 9-25, Revelation 21 3, Genesis 3 8, Mark 15 37-39 and Revelation 3 20. The speaker drew our attention to the typical representation of the Tabernacle as described in the later chapters of the book of Exodus.

Yesterday [May 3rd] we were blessed by a clear and powerful Gospel message from our Brother Philip Kaye who directed us to John 3 14 and to Numbers 21 4 -10. He described how we have all rebelled, deserve punishment but that when we genuinely repent we can turn to Jesus for forgiveness and salvation.
